Course Overview
🖼️ Develop your drawing skills: Using proportional and observational techniques, including a grid system to plan your portrait. Intermediates: test yourself with a freehand preparatory study
👨🎨 Support, advice and feedback: Support with your study, including one to one tutoring and guidance
📷 Live Demonstrations via Zoom Screen-share: Have a break and ask questions or paint along with Milan Demonstrations include drawing, colour-mixing and detailing to understand the process of building up a portrait from initial sketch to completion
🎨 Recommended Resources and Housekeeping Tips: Get advice on keeping your art materials in top condition, storing your supplies and canvas safely
What do I need to bring?
For acrylics: Daler Rowney System 3 acrylics recommended, brushes, A4 heavyweight paper or A4 canvas board (Windsor & Newton recommended), cup of water for rinsing brushes, palette, square of kitchen roll
For oils: Daler Rowney Georgian Oils, brushes, Gamsol mineral spirit for cleaning brushes, A4 heavyweight paper or A4 canvas board (Windsor & Newton recommended), palette, square of kitchen roll, bar of soap
Learning Outcomes
Unearth the process behind a famous work of art and learn the signature aesthetic by analysing the use and application of colour. You will be introduced to the tips and tools required to reproduce a famous portrait, including:
preparing a portrait (canvas base wash, gridding and sketching)
paint-mixing (particularly flesh tones)
gauging light and dark values
layering and blending
highlights and detailing
The downloadable file includes a pre-gridded range of images suitable for various experience levels, featuring contemporary works and classic paintings by van Gogh and Derain. You will receive a secure link to the file lasting 24 hour after the first download.
It is recommended to keep a ventilated space if using oil paints.
